Several books that I have found helpful in understanding the dramatic changes in our economy and society, and some unexpected leadership and relationship lessons from an unlikely source:

1. The Long Tail, Chris Anderson: Simply explained and profound discussion of the fundamental economic shifts associated with virtually infinite choice. The paperback “Longer” edition includes a chapter on the long tail of marketing.
2. Tribes, Seth Godin: More a thoughtful discussion of leadership than anything else, it pulls together a lot of knowledge in one quick, easy to read and inspiring book.
3. Groundswell, Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff: Provides a useful framework and practical examples that illustrate how brands can effectively tap into the rising tide of socially-connected consumers and networks.
4. Start with Why, Simon Sinek: A strong case for why purpose matters and how successful people, companies and ideas use “why” as a platform to engage others. And yes, there are actually a physiological reasons that purpose is a good place to start when trying to communicate with others. 5. Firms of Endearment, Raj Sisodia, Jag Sheth and David B. Wolfe: Great exploration of successful firms, brands and companies that demonstrates the power of pursuing something other than the financial bottom line. Also great coverage of the multiple stakeholder approach.
6. Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortensen and David Oliver Relin: You think you have challenges trying to secure budget and execute the plan? This emotionally compelling story about the transformative power of doing something truly meaningful is also an unparalleled demonstration of how to build enduring, trust-based relationships in extremely difficult conditions. It also shows the unique struggles of an obscure “brand” trying to connect people around the world and fulfill a promise that will produce returns for generations.
