  • The cows are telling me to eat more chicken. They’re telling me to eat more chicken because it’s delicious and maybe a smidge healthier than many other fast food options. Unfortunately, the cows are messing with me. It’s Sunday and Chick-fil-A is closed.

I love Chick-fil-A. What I love about the brand goes far beyond perfectly seasoned chicken and deliciously crispy waffle fries. I love their commitment to customer service. When I visit with my toddler in tow, someone is always there to cheerfully carry my tray to the table. On top of that, they provide things like free bowls of Cheerios and plastic placemats for their tiniest customers. I love that they listen their customers. Twice I’ve contacted Chick-fil-A with suggestions for new locations, and for the record, they actually built a restaurant in one of the locations I recommended (Chick-fil-A lovers in Fort Worth, Texas near Hulen Street, you’re welcome).

I also love that they’ve found a way to be successful and stay true to their values. In a time when companies are pulling out all the stops just to make ends meet and charging fees for just about everything (ahem, AIRLINES), Chick-fil-A has stayed the course. In times of hardship, opening its doors on Sundays would be the easiest way to boost revenue, but in 64 years Chick-fil-A has never waivered on this decision. Does it do this because business is so good that it doesn’t need that extra weekend day’s worth of sales? Obviously not. Chick-fil-A remains closed on Sundays because it’s part of the company’s core values. It’s a commitment I respect even if it’s occasionally inconvenient.

I can appreciate just about any business leader who holds true to his or her principles, particularly in the face of immense financial gain. So the next time the cows are messing with me, I’ll do what I always do: remember that it’s Sunday, feel bummed for a minute, then laugh because the joke’s on them. I’ll grab a burger and satisfy my Chick-fil-A craving on Monday.

Great post, Lindsay. I think there are parallels to some other similar brands like In-N-Out Burger. They have managed to sustain a long-term commitment to their employees and quality products made “the right way,” which is to say, not the cheapest or easiest to make. There are a lot of other unique reasons that In-N-Out is so successful, but they have done a great job translating their commitment to something that customers completely embrace.
