  • October 15 is Blog Action Day and the 2010 focus is on water. Specifically, the almost unimaginable fact that about 1 billion people all over the world lack access to safe, clean drinking water. Frankly, this is something I’m aware of but almost never think about.

Most of what you read about this problem will focus on Africa or elsewhere in the developing world, but this is a lingering crisis that affects us all. It is truly our problem, and more importantly, an opportunity to flex some of our humanitarian muscle and eliminate this from the world’s “to do” list. While we invite you to sign the UN petition, we also have some other quick suggestions if you want to play a more direct role in solving the problem.

SMALL: Go to http://www.facebook.com/PUR. Today every “Like” of one of their posts equals a donation of 10 liters of water to Children’s Safe Drinking Water.

MEDIUM: Check out TOMS Shoes partnership with charity: water: http://www.charitywater.org/TOMS/. When you buy a pair, $5 goes towards wells in developing nations. And as always, for every pair of shoes you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need.

LARGE: Invest in businesses that solve the problems of water access and water quality. Explore Acumen Fund’s Water Portfolio: http://www.acumenfund.org/investments/portfolios/water-portfolio.html.

Thanks to Jonathan Feinstein for providing the three ways to engage.

      Greg,

Great job highlighting such an important topic. I am reminded of Seth Godin’s own call for this problem. My charity water has a cool site where instead of presents, friends can donate to dig a water well somewhere in your name. A cool way to help without having to purchase something.
